Pleasanton History Comes to Life in Two Interactive Exhibits

Background

The Museum on Main endeavored to expand access to its archival collection that told the story of Pleasanton as it grew throughout its history. The breadth and depth of materials made an interactive kiosk the perfect medium to allow visitors to explore the archive and see how Pleasanton became what it is today. In the end, two kiosk experiences were created: Growing Pleasanton focused on maps and historical locations around Pleasanton while the Alameda County Fair reveals the many aspects of the City’s grand event space.

Implementation

As visitors explore Pleasanton’s Museum on Main, they discover two touch kiosks that offer them the opportunity to explore the history of Pleasanton in new in exciting ways. Each exhibit lets visitors see sights around the area and learn more about the ways in which the community has evolved over time.

In Growing Pleasanton, visitors can explore archival maps of the city throughout its history and see it grow from year to year. The interactive has two main modes: City Explorer and Map Timeline. City Explorer will allow the visitor to explore five regions of Pleasanton, seeing many of the historical and modern sights around the city. As they tap on various points of interest, they can cycle through multiple archival images and learn what historic buildings are still standing in the City. The Map Timeline covers the development of Pleasanton as seen through nearly a dozen historical maps. Visitors can drag and zoom through the various maps, seeing how Pleasanton has evolved over the span of many years.

In the Alameda County Fair interactive, visitors learn all about the County Fair via a Content Explorer and can also test their eye in the Livestock Trivia Game. The County Fair Content Explorer allows visitors to explore many of the features and attractions that have made the Alameda County Fair such a well-known attraction, including the racetrack, the carnival and its rides, the exhibit halls and more. The ten content areas are flush with archival video and photography that brings the past to life. In the Livestock Trivia Game, visitors participate in a multiple choice quiz has them judging their own livestock competition, choosing which animal gets the blue ribbon.

These kiosks represent the Museum on Main’s dedication to serving its local community with new and exciting opportunities to explore the cities history. We were so honored to work with the Museum as they brought these new experiences to their visitors.
